Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is the thing that keeps your ticker ticking. As
we age supplementation becomes more important. Without CoQ10 we will
not have the energy to do anything. Every cell in our body needs
CoQ10. When you do push-ups you get to a point where you can't do
another one, that's because you ran out of CoQ10 at that point. The
heart can't go on strike like that so CoQ10 is stored up in the
heart to make sure that continues ticking.

Coenzyme Q10: The Spark Plug by Mark Stegler, NMD
Several pictures come to mind when someone mentions the supplement
coenzymeQ10 (also referred to as CoQ10). One is that of the heart. I
see this big, red pumping muscle contracting and relaxing. Inside
the heart are tiny explosions where energy is being created. Within
these cells I see the spark plug. The spark plug is CoQ10.
Without coenzyme Q10, heart cells could not produce energy, known as
ATP. Though the the heart is the most famous center of operations
for CoQ10, it's found in other body cells as well-and in all of
them, it's important for energy production.
But the heart suffers most when there's a lack of
CoQ10. It beats slowly. Its contractions are wimpy. Its rhythm goes
awry. When a heart doesn't have enough CoQ10 for proper electrical
conduction, it suffers as it starves-and, of course, the whole
circulatory system pays the price.
Furtunately,
when new CoQ10 comes on the scene, recovery can be noticeable and
rapid. As CoQ10 saturates the heart cells, life returns; the heart
resumes its strong, regular series of rhythmical contractions;
tissues fill with more oxygen as blood flow improves; and energy
abounds.
Better Vessels
Not only does CoQ10 improve heart cells, it also renovates the
highways and byways of all our blood vessel walls. Sudjected to constant pounding
from the surge of blood flowing through them, our arteries and veins
can get damaged over time as the pressure builds. As those blood
vessels absorb some of the coenzyme Q10 that's circulating through
the body, the walls relax and blood pressure drops. Blood flow hits
an optimum level-nor too fast and not too slow, but just right to
deliver oxygen and nutrients to the tissues.
The
blood vessel walls are safer when blood pressure is lower-hence, the
premium that we place on "normal blood pressure" As pressure rises,
so does the risk of heart attack or stroke.
CoQ10 Food Sources:
CoQ10 is found in high amounts in meat and fish. Nuts are also a
source as are some vegetables like broccli and spinach. The body
manufactures CoQ10 from the amino acid tyrosine. This synthesis
requires the action of vitamins C, B6 B12, folic acid, niacin, and
pantothenic acid. Another importanat function of CoQ10 is that it
works to recycle vitamin E.
Dosage: Follow your
doctors recommendations. In his book The Natural Physicians's
Healing Therapies Mark NMD suggests:
If your
health is good but just want to take coenzyme Q10 for prevention,
I'd recommend 50 to 100 mg daily. It does make sense to supplement
with CoQ10, whatever the state of your health, as cardiovascular
disease can sneak up on just about anyone (it's the leading cause of
death in the United States) and CoQ10 is one of the best
antioxidants for the entire cardiovascular network.
